Methodology

The research methodology is primarily quantitative, but also includes a qualitative component.

According to the objectives, the activities developed in this project are centered around four main areas: documental, design, data collection and experimental.

1. Documental

We have compiled demographic, social and linguistic information on the entire population residing in each of the four cities.

2. Design

We have designed analysis tools which are similar but have been adapted to each individual situation. We rely on the survey method, using the matched-guise technique and the sociolinguistic questionnaire.

3. Data collection

The compilation of data varies if the city is in the Peninsula or outside of its borders. In Barcelona, Mallorca and Valencia our survey was answered by university students (resident or not in the cities and their first language being Catalan and/or Castilian or another), while in New York the sample is composed of Spanish emigrants or their descendants, from any Catalan-speaking region in the Peninsula and residing in the State of New York.

4. Experimental

The experimental part includes the analysis and statistical treatment of the data with SPSS.
