Diploma of Postgraduate Studies: Terminology and Professional Needs

 

The Diploma of Postgraduate Studies: Terminology and Professional Needs has a total value of 20 ECTS credits: a 15-credit course plus a 5-credit final paper. The duration of the course is 8 weeks (6 class weeks plus two make-up weeks). At the end of the course students are allowed 30 days to write the final assignment.

Objectives

The objectives of this online second level course on Terminology are:

• To help students expand their overall view on Terminology.
• Studying deeply the interdisciplinary basis of terminology.
• Analyzing in detail the relation of terminology with documentation, translation, lexicography, linguistic standardisation, language teaching and linguistic engineering.

Contents

The Course consists of six didactic units moderated and supervised by an instructor:

1. Terminology and documentation
2. Terminology and translation
3. Terminology, terminography and lexicography
4. Terminology, international standardisation, and linguistic normalisation
5. Terminology and language teaching
6. Terminology, linguistic engineering and computational linguistics

• Qualified faculty
• Digital classroom with access restricted to the course students and instructors, with exclusive didactic material designed for webpages: discussion forums, chat, evaluation exercises, consultation box, administrative and academic services.
• Individual supervision and dayly connection with the teacher assigned to each unit, the course coordinator and the webmaster to solve topic-related doubts or other questions.
• Didactic material available in two formats: online in web-format in the digital classroom, and in a CD-ROM provided at the end of the course (Please note that the CD-ROM version of the course can take several months for editing reasons).

Working language

This course has a Spanish and an English edition. However, readings may be in other languages than English or Spanish.

Course technical requirements

No special software, hardware or high speed internet connexion are necessary.

Candidate selection

The c andidate selection process will be based on registration order and academic qualifications.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course and the final written assignment, the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra will issue a Postgraduate Diploma in Terminology and Professional Needs. If only the course is completed, a corresponding certificate for 15 credits will be issued.

• Admission requirements: In order to be admitted to the course, students must have a first or second cycle university degree. Please read carefully the course description before filling in the pre-registration form.
