Introduction to Terminology online Postgraduate Course

 

The Introduction to Terminology Online Postgraduate Course is a six-week and 10-credit (ECTS) course.

Objectives

The Introduction to Terminology course aims to:

• Introduce students to the understanding of terminology as a theoretical and applied field
• Present its fundamental units within the framework of specialized discourse and knowledge
• Familiarise students with the applied knowledge needed for the elaboration of specialized dictionaries

Contents

The course includes six didactic units, each of them taught by a different instructor:

• Unit 1: Terminology and specialized communication
• Unit 2: Specialized knowledge units
• Unit 3: The terminological unit
• Unit 4: The terminographical work: term collection
• Unit 5: Terminology: definition and functions
• Unit 6: Terminology: history and organization

Course description

• Online distance course.
• Qualified faculty
• Digital classroom with access restricted to the course students and instructors, with exclusive didactic material designed for webpages: discussion forums, chat, evaluation exercises, consultation box, administrative and academic services.
• Individual supervision and dayly connection with the teacher assigned to each unit, the course coordinator and the webmaster to solve topic-related doubts or other questions.
• Didactic material available in two formats: online in web-format in the digital classroom, and in a CD-ROM provided at the end of the course (Please note that the CD-ROM version of the course can take several months for editing reasons).

Working Languages

This course has a Spanish and an English edition. However, readings may be in other languages than English or Spanish.

Course technical requirements

No special software, hardware or high speed Internet connections are necesssary.

• Maximum number of students admitted: 35
• Admission requirements: In order to be admitted to the course, it is necessary to have a first cycle university degree or equivalent.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course, the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra will issue a diploma for the 60-hour Introduction to Terminology Postgraduate Course.

The Introduction to Terminology Postgraduate Course corresponds to Level 1 (Beginner) of the modular online programme in Terminology.
