Foundations of Terminology. Online. English edition

Foundations of Terminology is an online postgraduate course which lasts eight weeks (6 teaching weeks plus two make-up weeks). This course is delivered in English and has a value of 10 (ECTS) credits.

This course also has a Spanish edition

Objectives

The course Foundations of Terminology aims to:

Introduce students to the understanding of terminology as both, a theoretical and an applied field.
Present its object of study (i.e. terminological units) within the framework of specialized discourse and knowledge.
Provide students with the applied notions needed for the elaboration of specialized dictionaries.

The course is composed of six course units:

Unit 1: Terminology: history and organization
Unit 2: Terminology: definition and functions
Unit 3: Terminology and specialized communication
Unit 4: Specialized knowledge units
Unit 5: The terminological unit
Unit 6: The terminographical work: term collection

Course description

Online distance course taught by qualified faculty.
Digital classroom with access restricted to the course students and instructors, with exclusive didactic material designed for e-learning: readings, discussion forums, chat, evaluation exercises, consultation box and tests. Technical, administrative and academic support is also available during the course.
Individual supervision and communication between students and teachers on a daily basis to solve topic-related doubts.
Didactic material available in two formats: online, in the digital classroom during the course, and in CD-ROM, provided at the end of the master edition (Please note that the edition of the CD-ROM version of the course can take several months).

Working Languages

This course is delivered in English. However, readings may be in other languages than English.

Course technical requirements

No special software, hardware or high speed Internet connections are necesssary.

Admission requirements: In order to be admitted to the course, it is necessary to have a university degree or equivalent.

Course certificate

Upon successful completion of the Foundations of Terminology course, the Institute for Applied Linguistics of Pompeu Fabra University will issue and send a Certificate of Postgraduate Studies.

Studying further

The Foundations of Terminology postgraduate course corresponds to the first module (Level 1) of the online Master in Terminology, which also includes a second level course, two workshops and a final project.
