Doctor Training: PhD dissertations, research stages

Since 1994, the IULA offered a PhD program in Linguistic Sciences and Applied Linguistics (at first untitled PhD in Applied Linguistics: Lexic and discourse), that has been given financial aids for Quality Doctoral Programs each year. During its nine editions, hosting 151 students, numerous PhD dissertations on the different research subjects at the institute have been submitted.

Starting year 2006-07, the academical offer of the PhD program at the IULA, and its related M.A. in Applied Linguistics, is integrated within the Linguistic Communication and Multilingual Mediation - PhD at UPF, and specifically within the Theoretical and Applied Linguistics - MA, a diploma designed within the frame of the European Higher Education Area.

Researchers at the IULA participate as professors and tutors in this official program. The students chosing the research path will be able to do the PhD at the IULA in the following subjects:

• Lexicology and Lexicography
• Terminology and Knowledge Management
• Descriptive and Formal Linguistics and Variation
• Computational Linguistics and Language Engineering

To study for a PhD implies writing a PhD dissertation while being integrated in a research group and related to an ongoing research project. The IULA offers to those interested the resources and infrastructures necessary to write the PhD dissertations or make predoctoral or postdoctoral stages at the research groups INFOLEX, IULATERM and UVAL.
