Admission requirements

For admission to the PhD in Language Sciences and Applied Linguistics a selection is made among pre-enrolled candidates. The required conditions for acceptance are: sound academic records and demonstrated interest in one of the research lines of the program.

The linguistic requirements are passive competence (oral and written comprehension) in Spanish or Catalan and passive competence (oral and written comprehension) in English or French. Students are offered Catalan language lessons free of charge with the support of the Secretaria General de Política Lingüística of the Generalitat of Catalunya.

The applied selection criteria are:

• average grade of the academic records
• other qualifications (a second bachelor's degree, MA's or PhD's)
• demonstrated interest in one of the applied linguistics research lines of the program.
• certified linguistic competences

A maximum of 20 students can be admitted to the program.

Online registration and admission requirements

Pre-enrolment in this program is done online by submitting the registration form in which the following must be indicated:

• Personal and contact information
• Interest in Applied Linguistics or one related speciality
• Intended time to take the program (one or two years)
• Possession of a scholarship or interest in obtaining one

In order for the pre-enrolment to be effective, the following documents must be mailed or sent by a courier service to IULA:

• a certified copy of the student's academic records
• a certified copy of his or her bachelor's degree (with the Apostille of The Hague seal)
• curriculum vitae
• a photocopy of the ID document or passport
• an ID-card-size photograph.

Candidates are informed as soon as the online enrolment form and the mailed documents are received.

Enrolment period

From 1 April to 23 June 2005

Pre-enrolled candidates selection and acceptance resolutions

First selection: 23 - 29 May 2005
Second selection: 27 June - 3 July 2005

The selection resolutions will be communicated by e-mail to those concerned and the selected candidates will receive an official letter of acceptance in order to be able to get permits and visas or apply for scholarships.

If necessary, an extraordinary pre-enrolment period would be open in July and the selection would be in September 2005.

Student registration

UPF Ph.D. Registration 05-06

Accepted students must be in Barcelona the first days of October in order to attend the tutorial sessions personally (take part in the presentation of the course, make the subjects selection and fulfil the registration procedures), start reinforcement language classes and carry out the convenient residency procedures before classes start.

El The PhD program in Language Sciences and Applied Linguistics as well as the Master's program in Applied Linguistics are teaching programs of public price.

Scholarships

Those interested in the PhD program in Language Sciences and Applied Linguistics or in the MA in Applied Linguistics can request, before the pre-enrolment period, that their admission be exclusively conditioned to scholarship application.

For all candidates admitted to the program:

IULA Predoctoral Scholarships of UPF (3 scholarships which last 2 years are offered each academic course)

For European Union students in the PhD program:

• FPU Predoctoral scholarships from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
• FPI Research scholarships from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
• FI Predoctoral scholarships from the Generalitat of Catalunya
  
• FI-IQUC scholarships from the Generalitat of Catalunya

For non-European Union students in the PhD and the MA programs:

• European Union Alban scholarships
  
• MAE/AECI scholarships from the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores
  
• Fundación Carolina scholarships
• Fundación Ford scholarships

Students receiving one of these scholarships are granted exemption from the credits registration (but not from the registration fee), receive monthly allowances and are required full-time dedication. These scholarships are incompatible with any other scholarship or work contract.
