[23/06/15] El Periódico de Catalunya newspaper collects the expert views of Núria Bel, TRL group, on the demand for more investment in a multilingual European Digital Single Market

El Periódico de Catalunya echoed the campaign started on the occasion of the European Union programme, Digital Single Market / DSM, which calls for economic investment in machine translation and other language services for all European languages, in order to ensure multilingualism. The expert voice of Dr Núria Bel, lead researcher of the Language Resources and Technology (TRL) group at the IULA, was reported.

Dr Bel is one of more than 3,600 European researchers who have signed the manifesto calling for investment in favour of the distinguishing feature of the European digital market, which is multilingualism. In the news story, Dr Bel stressed the importance of investment in research in public universities, which nourish leading technology companies like Google, and the drain of researchers to multinationals derived from the lack of investment.

Dr Bel participated in the summit of Riga (Latvia) last April, where METAFORUM 2015 also took place, which is an international meeting of the network of excellence META-NET, of which the Institute for Applied Linguistics is a member.
