We regret to announce the passing of Dr. Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit (1920-2014). Dr. Badia i Margarit was a leading scholar of Catalan, and his work on the language, and especially on Catalan historical grammar, made him one of the most important figures in European philology in the 20th century.
Dr. Badia i Margarit had been Professor at the University of Barcelona, where he was Chancellor 1978-1986, and was a member of the Philological Section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (the Catalan Academy of Sciences). He was a visiting scholar at several universities in Europe and the United States, and received honorary doctorates from eight universities for his academic work and his lifetime dedication to improving the social status of Catalan.
